Beginner Witchcraft Supplies: What You Actually Need
One of the biggest misconceptions about witchcraft is that you need to spend hundreds of dollars before you can even begin.
Scroll through social media for five minutes and you'll probably see beautiful altars covered in crystals, candles, herbs and tools that look like they've taken years to collect.
While they're lovely to look at, they can also make beginners feel like they need to buy everything before they're "ready."
The truth is, you don't.
Some of the most meaningful spiritual practices require very little at all.
If you're just starting your journey, here's what I actually recommend.
The Most Important Thing You Need
Before crystals.
Before candles.
Before tarot cards.
Before herbs.
You need curiosity.
Witchcraft isn't about owning the biggest crystal collection or the prettiest altar. It's about creating intentional moments that help you connect with yourself and your practice.
Everything else is simply a tool.
A Journal
If I could only recommend one physical item, it would be a notebook.
Your journal can become your Book of Shadows, a place to write down tarot readings, intentions, moon rituals, herb notes, dreams, affirmations or anything else you learn along the way.
It doesn't need to be fancy.
A simple notebook from the supermarket works perfectly.
A Candle
Candles are one of the easiest ways to create a ritual.
Lighting a candle can mark the beginning of meditation, journaling, intention setting or simply a quiet moment for yourself.
You don't need dozens of different coloured candles when you're first starting.
Even one simple white candle is enough.
As your practice grows, you might enjoy working with different candle colours and their traditional symbolism, but there is absolutely no rush.
A Tarot or Oracle Deck
You don't have to own tarot cards to practise witchcraft, but many people enjoy using them as a tool for reflection.
Tarot isn't about predicting every detail of your future.
For many people, it's a way to explore different perspectives, journal, and better understand themselves.
If tarot feels intimidating, oracle cards are another beautiful place to start.
Choose artwork that genuinely speaks to you.
One or Two Crystals
You don't need fifty crystals.
Honestly, one or two is plenty.
Many beginners choose crystals simply because they feel drawn to them.
If you're not sure where to begin, these are some popular choices.
• Clear Quartz, often associated with clarity and intention.
• Amethyst, commonly chosen for calm and reflection.
• Rose Quartz, traditionally linked with self-love and compassion.
• Black Obsidian, often used in grounding and protection rituals.
Remember, there is no perfect crystal collection.
Build it slowly over time.
Herbs
You don't need rare or expensive herbs.
Many herbs commonly used in spiritual practice are already in your kitchen.
Rosemary.
Lavender.
Bay leaves.
Cinnamon.
Chamomile.
Rose petals.
Take the time to learn about their history, traditional symbolism and cultural significance before incorporating them into your own practice.
A Quiet Space
One of the most overlooked "supplies" is simply having somewhere to pause.
You don't need an elaborate altar.
A bedside table.
A shelf.
A small tray.
A windowsill.
Any little corner that helps you slow down can become a meaningful ritual space.
Ritual Oils
As your practice grows, you may enjoy incorporating ritual oils into your daily routine.
I personally love using ritual oils because they're such a simple reminder to reconnect with my intention.
Whether applied before journaling, meditation, candle rituals or simply before leaving the house, they can become a beautiful part of your everyday practice.
Bath Salts
Spiritual practice doesn't always have to involve formal rituals.
Sometimes self-care is the ritual.
A bath made with botanicals, herbs and your chosen intention can become a beautiful opportunity to relax, reflect and reconnect with yourself after a long day.
Incense
Many people enjoy burning incense while meditating, reading tarot or creating a peaceful atmosphere.
It's completely optional, but if you enjoy fragrance, it can become a lovely addition to your practice.
Always burn incense safely in a suitable holder and never leave it unattended.
A Curious Mind
This is probably the most important thing on the list.
The best witches aren't the ones with the most tools.
They're the ones who continue learning.
Read books.
Ask questions.
Explore different traditions respectfully.
Take notes.
Stay curious.
Your knowledge will always be more valuable than your collection.
Things You Don't Need
Let's bust a few common myths.
You do not need:
• An expensive altar.
• Every crystal you see online.
• Rare herbs.
• Dozens of candles.
• Fancy ritual tools.
• Years of experience.
• Permission from someone else.
Your practice is valid whether you've spent $10 or $1,000.
Build Your Collection Slowly
One of my favourite things about witchcraft is that your collection naturally grows alongside your journey.
Maybe you start with a notebook.
Later you buy your first tarot deck.
Then a crystal catches your eye.
Eventually you discover herbs, candles, oils or moon rituals.
There is no timeline.
Collect the things that genuinely inspire you, not the things social media tells you to buy.
My Beginner Recommendations
If someone asked me what I'd buy first, this would be my list.
• A notebook.
• One candle.
• One tarot or oracle deck.
• One or two crystals.
• A ritual oil with a personal intention.
• A handmade bath salt for self-care.
That's honestly enough to begin building a beautiful practice.
A Little Note From Genesis
When I first started my own spiritual journey, I thought I needed to know everything before I could call myself a witch.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
The most important part of any practice isn't what you own.
It's how present you are.
Whether you're lighting a candle, writing in your journal, enjoying a ritual bath or simply taking five quiet minutes to breathe, those moments matter.
If you're just starting out, be kind to yourself.
Take your time.
Learn as you go.
Your practice doesn't need to look like anyone else's.
It only needs to feel right for you.
And remember, every experienced witch started exactly where you are now.
