How to Start Practising Witchcraft as a Complete Beginner
If you're reading this, chances are you've been curious about witchcraft for a little while.
Maybe you've been seeing tarot readings online, collecting crystals, saving moon ritual videos, or browsing handmade spiritual products and wondering where to begin.
First of all, welcome.
Secondly, take a deep breath because you don't need to know everything before you start.
One of the biggest misconceptions about witchcraft is that you need expensive tools, years of knowledge, or a perfectly curated altar before you can call yourself a witch.
You don't.
Every experienced practitioner started exactly where you are now.
Curious.
There Is No "Right" Way to Practise Witchcraft
One of the first things you'll notice is that everyone seems to do things differently.
Some people work with herbs.
Some love tarot.
Others enjoy candle rituals, astrology, crystals, meditation, journaling, or working with the moon.
Some people practise every day.
Others only practise occasionally.
That's because witchcraft is incredibly personal.
Your practice should feel authentic to you, not like you're copying someone else on social media.
Start with Intention
If I could recommend just one place to begin, it would be intention.
Before buying crystals or learning tarot, ask yourself one simple question.
Why are you interested in witchcraft?
Maybe you want to feel more confident.
Maybe you're looking for a creative outlet.
Maybe you want to reconnect with nature.
Maybe you simply enjoy creating quiet moments of mindfulness.
There isn't a wrong answer.
Your intention becomes the foundation of your practice.
Learn Before You Buy
It can be tempting to fill your shopping cart with crystals, candles, herbs and every beautiful spiritual tool you see online.
Trust me, we've all been there.
But you don't need everything straight away.
Instead, spend some time learning.
Read books.
Watch educational content.
Ask questions.
Explore different traditions and discover what genuinely interests you.
Over time, you'll naturally build a collection of tools that actually mean something to you.
Start Simple
Some of the most meaningful rituals are also the simplest.
You could begin with:
• Writing in a journal for ten minutes.
• Lighting a candle while thinking about your goals.
• Pulling a tarot card and reflecting on its meaning.
• Going for a mindful walk in nature.
• Drinking a cup of tea without distractions.
• Creating a simple evening ritual before bed.
Witchcraft doesn't have to be elaborate.
Sometimes the quietest rituals are the most powerful.
Explore Different Areas of Witchcraft
One of the best parts of being a beginner is discovering what you enjoy.
You might find yourself drawn to:
Tarot
Tarot is a wonderful tool for self-reflection and personal growth. Many people use tarot to journal, explore different perspectives and better understand themselves.
Crystals
Crystals are often used as reminders of intentions or personal goals. Whether you're drawn to them for their symbolism or simply because you love collecting beautiful stones, they can become meaningful parts of your practice.
Herbal Witchcraft
Working with herbs and botanicals is one of my favourite parts of creating products.
Many herbs have rich cultural histories and have traditionally been used in rituals, baths, teas, incense and spiritual practices around the world.
Candle Rituals
Lighting a candle creates a beautiful moment to pause and focus on your intention.
It doesn't need to be complicated.
Sometimes lighting a candle while you journal is enough.
Moon Rituals
Many people enjoy setting intentions during a New Moon or taking time to reflect and let go during a Full Moon.
You don't have to follow every moon phase, but it can be a lovely way to create regular moments of reflection.
Don't Compare Yourself to Other Witches
Social media can make it seem like everyone has huge crystal collections, perfectly decorated altars and years of experience.
Remember, you're usually seeing someone's highlights, not their beginning.
Your practice doesn't need to look aesthetic.
It doesn't need to be expensive.
It doesn't need anyone else's approval.
The most meaningful practice is the one that genuinely feels right for you.
Do You Need an Altar?
Not at all.
Some people love having an altar because it gives them a dedicated space for their practice.
Others never have one.
If you'd like to create one, it can be as simple as a small shelf with a candle, a crystal, a plant or something that feels meaningful to you.
There are no rules.
Beginner Witchcraft Supplies
If you're looking to slowly build your collection, here are a few beginner-friendly tools.
• A journal
• A candle
• A tarot deck
• One or two crystals that you're naturally drawn to
• A ritual oil
• Bath salts for self-care rituals
• Incense if you enjoy it
• A small bowl or tray for your ritual space
Remember, none of these are required.
They're simply tools that can support your practice.
Give Yourself Permission to Learn
You won't know everything after your first book.
You won't master tarot in a week.
You won't recognise every herb overnight.
That's okay.
Witchcraft isn't about reaching the finish line.
It's about continuing to learn, grow and discover what resonates with you.
Enjoy being a beginner.
Ask questions.
Make mistakes.
Stay curious.
A Little Note From Genesis
When I create personalised ritual oils, intention candles, handmade bath salts, room sprays and custom witchcraft boxes, my goal has never been to tell people how they should practise.
Instead, I want to create products that support your own journey.
Whether you're just starting or you've been practising for years, I hope my products encourage you to slow down, create meaningful rituals and reconnect with yourself.
Your practice doesn't need to be perfect.
It just needs to feel like yours.
Welcome to the beginning of your journey. I hope you enjoy every step of it.
